the gaslight anthem - the seƱor and the queen (2008)

these jersey boys are one of the biggest surprises of the year for me. i'm not typically into this sort of thing, but the gaslight anthem have perfected the songwriting craft. everything i've heard from these guys is top shelf. i also caught them open up for alkaline trio and thrice a few weeks back, and it ruled as well. the 59' sound will more than likely be pretty high up on many (including myself) people's year-end lists. but for now, enjoy this ep, which is a little ditty they released earlier this year.

sorry to anyone who told me to check these guys out at any point this year, because i probably ignored you.

thrice - myspace transmissions (2008)

every time this band releases something, i cry. the new shit they did with myspace is no exception. these tracks really bring some more life to the tracks on the alchemy index. enjoy.

acceptance - undone ep (2005)

acceptance was a criminally underrated band. considering the fact that they were on columbia records, they should've blown up. but like most bands that were too good for their time, they've since broken up and moved onto many subpar bands. jason, the lead vocalist, had one of the best voices in modern rock at the time. jason really shines on the undone ep (which was released as a bonus or something??). the acoustic version of "take cover" is arguably better than the original, too. either way, dig on these if you haven't already.

the toxic avenger - superheroes ep (2007)

yes, toxic avenger is back on our blog. and i'd say it's been a while. anyway, this is the ep he released last year.

my only complaint with this ep is the lack of songs, but the escape remix makes it well worth it.

paper rival - paper rival (2007)

paper rival (they used to go by "keating," but went under a name change in 07) is an fairly new indie rock act out of nashville who released the paper rival ep on photo finish records in mid 07. smooth vocals and slick guitars made for a great debut ep. i can't wait to hear more from them.

colour revolt - colour revolt (2006)

colour revolt are an indie-rock outfit out of mississippi. their small-town indie rock is gritty yet remains somewhat meloncholy. vocalist jesse c. can move up and down the scales, from raspy yells to falsettos in no time. i can't really compare CR to any other band, or say much else about them. they're currently in the studio recording a follow-up to their self-titled ep, due out sometime in 08. i recently caught these guys live, and they played a handful of new stuff, and it sounds incredibly promising.

manchester orchestra - you brainstorm, i brainstorm, but brilliance needs a good editor (2005)

manchester orchestra have been on the rise lately, touring constantly in support of their lp, "i'm like a virgin losing a child." they've toured with the likes of kevin devine, brand new and kings of leon in the past year and have been starting the create a buzz. this ep was released before 'virgin' and although it's not out of print, it can be hard to come across. this ep is worth checking out for 'the procession' alone, the standout track on a pretty solid ep.
