the american masquerade - unveiled (2007)

great group of dudes from my hometown. caught them play at UH last night, which was cool since i haven't seen them since they were called 1977. they play a good mix of pop/folk/rock with electronic elements infused throughout to get your jollies going. for some reason they've always reminded me of limbeck with electronics.

do yourself and check this EP out. shit is gold. one of the few houston bands that are worth your time.

the kinison - what are you listening to? (2004)

can't stop, won't stop the rhythm goin'
don't stop, won't stop the rhythm goin'

remember a few years ago when dance/post-punk was really big? well the kinison were poised to be the "next big thing" to come out of that scene. instead they released an album on a major label, got no promotion, essentially went under the radar, and later broke up. but the one full length they released is actually really good. imagine a dancier version of at the drive in with screechier vocals. recorded in just fifteen days, the best thing about this album is the rhythm section. the drum and bass combinations are insane. pounding yet intricate drumming, and some of the grooviest bass lines on an album of it's type. pick this one up if you like your music loud, but still want to shake it.

various - ed rec vol 1 & 2

pedro winter started up ed banger records in 2002. you might know him as busy p (he also manages daft punk and justice, among others). ed banger have been all over the place in 2K7, taking over magazine covers, clubs, even mtv. it's the name to drop this year, and i doubt that will change anytime soon. the gang's all here on these comps.. uffie, justice, busy p, dj mehdi, sebastiAn, so me, feadz.. and so on. put these on at your next party and act like you're in the know. you're welcome.

daft punk - daft club (2004)

so this group doesn't really need much of an introduction. daft punk released a collection of remixes in 2004 (US), with the majority of the songs remixed coming off of 2001's discovery, and one off of homework. tons of artists worked on these remixes, most notably the neptunes and basement jaxx. get on it.

digitalism - idealism (2007)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

digitalism is an electro-duo out of germany, and they recently released their debut album, idealism on kitsune music. distorted bass? check. heavy synth? check. apparently, their live shows are a sight to see. fortunately, they're currently doing a US tour (they're even coming to houston!) so be sure to check that out.

sebastiAn - smoking kills (2005) and ross ross ross (2006)

ed banger is officially in the wwm building. this is the first of what i'm sure will be many ed banger records related posts. sebastiAn (yes, it's supposed to have the capital a) is a french electro artist/dj. he's done remixes for daft punk, kellis, cut copy, and uffie, amongst others. in typical ed banger fashion, sebastiAn brings the raw ish to the table with quick cuts and big beats. hit the floor.

the faint - danse macabre (2001)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

the faint have been around for a while now, and with the recent wave of electro and the like, i feel the need to mention a record that was (arguably) ahead of its time (as far as modern music goes, anyway). danse macabre came out over 6 years ago, and still holds a pretty solid place in many people's record collection. most would also say it's their best work, including myself. since then, the faint continued perfecting a very synth-heavy and distinct brand of indie, put on brilliant live shows, and make you move your bones. my only complaint with this one is that it's not long enough.

cavil at rest

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

if you're into moving your hips, vocal harmonies, tapping your toes or clapping your hands, you should probably listen to this band. cavil at rest is a tiny band out of california, and these two (especially the s/t) eps are hands down their best work. they've recently taken a less accessible route, but these two eps are still golden and get constant spins from me.
