shad - the old prince (2007)

you might remember shad from my earlier post about his first album, when this is over. well the poetic emcee is back with his 2007 follow up, the old prince.

shad's ability to ride a beat with his impeccable flow shines even more than on his debut, and his word play is definitely on point. all you common, talib, and phonte fans need to be dropping this dudes name in threads on your favorite forums. just be sure to tell em who sent ya.

nas - illmatic (1994)

as far as my stance on this album goes, there are very few words to describe this album. to sum it up, it's brilliant. nasir jones is one of the greatest musicians of all time. any sub-par album he ever releases will be overshadowed by the fact that he released this album at the age of 21.

basically, he puts out a revolutionary album at the age of 21, and i blog about it when i'm 21. my life sucks.

a tribe called quest - midnight marauders (1993)

as my contribution to roshan's "classic hip hop" posts, i'm gonna throw some love to one of my favs of all time, and one of my biggest personal influences, a tribe called quest. i remember this skateboard kid spun records and shit getting me way into these dudes when i was like 14. i'm choosing this album instead of the love movement because of the track "award tour" alone. remember when mtv used to do that x-games type shit? i remember the tribe killing it with that track. anyway, get on this album and relive a classic.

video for "award tour":

blue scholars - joe metro (2007)

blue scholars are a hip-hop duo out of seattle, washington. they're one of the few groups out there still trying to make lyrical hip-hop real and legitimate a driving force for the mainstream. i caught wind of this song on mtvU at school, and had to hear it immediately. one of my cousins told me about them, and it clicked, and i remembered the video, which was pretty exciting.

but just like all other lyricists, this duo will be underrated and overlooked. this is their single "joe metro," off of their 2007 album, bayani. also included is the video for it. check it out.

eminem - 8 mile road (2002)

ok, so i like eminem. and no this isn't a rec for the 02' flick. big deal, now once we get past that, you can listen to this song. yeah, it's definitely a little old and not to mention, overshadowed by the movie's lead single lose yourself, but this is more than likely em's best song.

the track basically it goes with the movie (yes, 8 mile) and the whole theme of a white rapper in a predominantly black neighborhood, yadda yadda yadda.
this song is fucking nuts. the third verse alone destroys most songs that are coming out today. complex rhymes and a dope beat. can't go wrong with that.

saul williams - self titled (2004)

saul williams could very well be the most underrated artist in music.. and i stress the word artist. in my eyes, the man's already a legend. a true emcee, poet, and spoken word icon, williams takes what hip hop is.. and isn't, to a new level. he's worked with the fugees, kanye west, trent reznor (who is co-producing saul's upcoming album), krs-one, allen ginsberg, sonia sanchez.. the list is incredible. he's also been published in the new york times, esquire, bomb magazine, and has had several of his own works published. do yourself a favor and download this album. your mind will thank you.

black star - black star (1998)

if you are a fan of hip-hop, and you haven't heard this record, then we probably hate you.

there are three reasons why you should love this record:

1. mos def.
2. talib kweli.
3. mos def + talib kweli.

this is one of the most brilliant albums of all time in any genre. two of the most ridiculously underrated emcee's working with each other on what most people would consider a classic. both jerome and i are huge fans of this record, and there is no reason why you shouldn't be either.

mos def and talib kweli are black star.

dizzee rascal - maths + english (2007)

i like clever album titles. maths and english by british emcee/producer dizzee rascal is certainly as clever as any (with maths meaning producing and english meaning lyric writing). homeboy came with it raw on his third album. this album is full of bangers. strong electronic flourishes collide with heavy hitting beats, and rascal's grime heavy flow is as apparent as ever. his influence from american hip hop artists is a little more apparent on this album than his previous work, but his drum and bass/beat heavy british style is still very much in the mix. lily allen, alex turner of the arctic monkeys, and famed houston duo UGK all make guest appearances. grab this one and get ready to throw your hands up high. especially when "sirens" comes on.
