album review: usher - here i stand (2008)

Artist: Usher
Album: Here I Stand
Record Label: LaFace Records
Release Date: May 27, 2008

Since the release of 2004’s Confessions, Usher Raymond IV has gone through many life-transforming changes. Aside from one of the highest selling albums of the decade, the R&B sensation has settled down, managed to get married and saw the birth of his first son.

Usher used this transformation into adulthood as a stepping stone and a blueprint for Here I Stand, his first studio album in four years. At face value, Here I Stand is a collection of songs that is no different than material found on Confessions, 8701 or even his debut album My Way. Despite the familiarity, the songs on Here I Stand reflect his new-found maturity as his writing is more focused on fidelity and taking care of his family.

On Here I Stand, Usher finds himself doing what he does best, which is creating tracks that are focused on sexuality, in every sense. Songs like “Trading Places,” “Love You Gently” and “This Ain’t Sex” should come as no surprise. “This Ain’t Sex” is one of the more refined songs on the album. Aside from a few cliché lines, the song is very reminiscent of an early 90s Michael Jackson.

Other standout tracks on the album include “Best Thing,” which sees a guest verse from hip-hop’s finest, Jay-Z. “Appetite” has a catchy hook and a crisp beat, and is another perfectly crafted hit in the making and could easily see mainstream success.

Fatherhood has brought out a new perspective in the superstar’s life. In “Prayer For You,” Usher sings a soulful melody to his infant son, who is heard cooing in the song’s background. In it, he bares all as he sings, “You carry my name/I pray that you’re better than me,” which is sure to tug on a few heart strings.

“Moving Mountains,” a song whose beat is very suggestive of a Timbaland influence and is also slated to be a single, is one of Usher’s most impressive efforts to date. The track is to Here I Stand will be what “Burn” was to Confessions, exploring the struggles of a failing relationship and its effects on both parties.

An album with 17 songs is bound to have a little bit of filler. Songs like the will.i.am produced “What’s Your Name?” and “Something Special” could have easily been left off of the album.

Considering the genre, the artist runs a very high risk of writing cliché and cheesy lyrics. Songs like “Trading Places” reads more like an online blog entry rather than a song. The type of storytelling approach in “Trading Places” and “Love You Gently” do not seem to be Usher’s forte, and should be reserved for R. Kelly, who penned the highly-addicting and narrated “Trapped in the Closet” series.

Aside from the minor setbacks, Here I Stand is a highly addictive and cohesive album which takes influences from the the best of modern and classic R&B. The impressive production line-up has also been beneficial to Usher. Fans of Usher’s previous albums should be able to find several gems on this album.

Growing up may have taken toll on Usher’s personal life, but it has not altered the man’s ability to create refreshing music.

note: i usually post reviews from the school newspaper's web site, but my copy editors did their thing and completely destroyed it, so i posted the original instead.

clipse - hell hath no fury (2006)

everyone has their shortcomings, and my biggest shortcoming in recent memory is not giving clipse a proper listen. i know, all hip-hop fans out there have either self-destructed or have bought plane tickets to houston to come shank me. however, i have been enlightened, and it's better late than never, amirite?!

clipse are the true saviors and the future of lyrical hip-hop. after sitting on youtube and watching countless videos catching up on what i've missed, i've found that there are huge things in store for clipse and the re-up gang in 08, including new albums.

anyway, if you are a total failure like me and haven't let this album wreak havoc on your brain, then do so immediately.

the juliana theory - emotion is dead (2000)

this is one of the best albums i own. odd thing about is i pretty much dislike or was bored to tears by the rest of their discography. emotion is dead is a classic album from start to finish. lush instrumentals, slick vocals and huge choruses are pretty much what this album is built on.

LOST

yes, i am seriously posting about lost. the finale was incredible. i always wonder if any of our readers actually watch the brilliance that is LOST. god knows it's run my life for the past three years (i caught on late).

please spam my aim (to the right side of the screen) with articles. i'm bored at work.

i've been wasting hours on end reading random bullshit about it, so i'll share:

nas - illmatic (1994)

as far as my stance on this album goes, there are very few words to describe this album. to sum it up, it's brilliant. nasir jones is one of the greatest musicians of all time. any sub-par album he ever releases will be overshadowed by the fact that he released this album at the age of 21.

basically, he puts out a revolutionary album at the age of 21, and i blog about it when i'm 21. my life sucks.

puff daddy and the family - no way out (1997)

alright, alright. "diddy" doesn't put out the greatest music anymore. but this album (in my eyes, anyway) is a classic. puffy was never the greatest emcee, but his debut is full-blown proof that he is a great producer and can get enough heat on his album to make an impact. growing up, this was one of my favorite albums, and i bumped it for weeks straight after i got my hands on it.

hell up in harlem.

the stryder

a couple of people have informed me that the link to the stryder album i posted is dead, and have inquired about other stryder releases.. so i figured while i'm uploading, i may as well just remind you of their amazing-ness and do another post with both full lengths.

the stryder were criminally underrated during their time. and since apparently the stryder albums are impossible to find online (at least, not for download).. i'm assuming the same is true today. while i have seen them name dropped on a few message boards, i think it's still safe to say that this is the best band you never gave a chance. fusing elements of post hardcore, hip hop, jazz, indie rock, and whatever else they could get their hands (ears?) on, i really think the stryder had something special going during their brief existence. i know from the first time i heard them on an evr sampler (cassette tape!) in high school, that they could do no wrong in my eyes. and i was right. expanding their sound on their last release, they went out with a bang that no one heard.

peter toh and scottie redex both have their solo projects going on now, and while both are incredible in their own right.. the two stryder full lengths will always have a place in my stereo.

daft punk meet louis vuitton (2007)

this isn't by any means new, but i thought it was kind of lame that we hadn't posted it (especially since it came out around the time we started this blog). this is a runway mix that daft punk did for louis vuitton's spring/summer '08 womens line. it's a pretty sick mix. get at it for sixteen minutes of live daft goodness (plus a sebastian remix of sebastian tellier, ratatat, busta rhymes, and of course, yeezy).

do work son.

65daysofstatic - dance parties (2008)

huge fan of this band. nearly lost my shit when i heard these two songs. they're off of their new ep with a title i'm too lazy to type. it's about dance parties though. and there are vocals. i'm just gonna assume that this is their personal take on the recent dance/electro/pop/whatever wave, haha. be sure to grab the destruction of small ideals, too.

music video: ratatat - mirando (2008)

another bizarre mindfuck video by ratatat. this is a new cut off of their new album, LP3, due out july 8. great album, as the duo brings hotness as usual. i'm sure you'll be seeing this video behind ratatat's stage set up in no time. speaking of which, i'd really like to catch em live again.

check out older ratatat post here.
